While the enormous neoclassical Teatro Massimo is well-known for opera performances, the Palermo Cathedral, built in the 12th century, is home to royal tombs. The Cappella Palatina, which has Byzantine mosaics, and the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal house that dates to the ninth century, are also in the centre. Popular marketplaces include the Vucciria, which is close to the port, and the central Ballar street market.
