This wonderful monastery, considered Catalonia's most important religious retreat, is hidden high in the craggy Montserrat Mountains. The world's oldest publishing house, established in 1499, is also located here.

Cartagena
In southeast Spain's Murcia area, the coastal city of Cartagena serves as a naval base. The city flourished during the Roman era after being founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C. Its numerous Roman ruins include a theatre from the first century B.C. and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with mosaics and murals. In the Punic Wall Interpretation Center, you may see the remains of a defence wall from the third century B.C.
