Arles City
In the Provence area of southern France, the city of Arles is located on the Rhône River. Arles is well-known for its numerous Roman ruins, including the Arles Amphitheatre (les Arènes d'Arles), which presently hosts plays, concerts, and bullfights.

Avignon
The city of Avignon is located on the Rhône River in the Provence region of southeast France. The Catholic popes had their throne there from 1309 to 1377. Up until 1791, when it became a part of France, it was still governed by the pope. The enormous Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace), which is encircled by mediaeval stone ramparts, is a striking example of this legacy.

Lyon
At the intersection of the Rhône and Saône rivers is Lyon, the regional capital of France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. In its heart, 2,000 years of history are represented by the Roman Amphitheatre des Trois Gaules, mediaeval and Renaissance buildings in Old Lyon, and the contemporary Confluence neighbourhood on the Presqu'île peninsula. Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse hill are connected by traboules, covered passages between buildings.
