Antarctic Experience

After a day and a half crossing the Drake Passage, which separates South America from Antarctica, your Holland America ship will arrive at the White Continent. You’ll begin your Antarctic Expedition sailing through the bays and islands of the Palmer Archipelago, off the northern tip of the long Antarctic Peninsula, which reaches out toward South America. Encircled in a landscape of snow and ice in every direction, your ship will slowly navigate the iceberg-dotted waters. The surroundings are hauntingly quiet as well, an aspect of the continent that comes as a surprise to many first-time visitors. Along the way, the ship's naturalists will point out the birds—terns, petrels, and gulls—found on the coast and on small islets at stops like Dallmann Bay. As you pass dark, rocky Cuverville Island, you’ll see some of the 6,500 pairs of gentoo penguins that make their home there, the largest known colony in the world. Continuing on to Paradise Harbor, you'll have a chance to observe not only gentoo and chinstrap penguins but possibly humans as well: Both Argentina and Chile have manned research stations here.

Expert Tips & Advice

Opt for late seating. Most cruise lines offer multiple dinner seatings. Pick the late seating because many of the excursions won't get you back in time for the early dinner seating.

Holland America Line

Founded more than a century ago in the Netherlands, Holland America (HAL) continues to work its Dutch heritage into the design of its ships and into the elegant but affordable cruise experience it offers. The Holland America Line cruise ships are named for classic vessels in the line’s history. Large paintings of old Holland America Line ships hang in the stairways, and floral themes, ship memorabilia, antiques and Indonesian touches (the Asian country is a former Dutch colony) all provide a subtle link to the line’s heritage.

At the same time, HAL very much rolls with the times, and you’ll find ships feature trendy Internet cafes, fun piano and sports bars, demonstration kitchens for cooking classes, roomy cabins with all the latest amenities, and cool new poolside pizzerias called Slice. Overall, the décor of the line’s newer ships is bolder and more colourful than the older ones.

Traditionally HAL has attracted an older clientele, but in the past decade has succeeded in appealing to a broader demographic, including families on its summer and holiday cruises especially. There are cheerful playrooms, video arcades, and teen rooms, plus most ships also have a secluded outdoor teen area called the Oasis.

While there are plenty of quiet nooks and crannies to hide with a good book or a deck of card, for active adults, HAL’s activities range from ballroom dance lessons to bingo, bridge, wine tasting, trivia contests, free computer workshops and self-guided iPod tours of the ship’s art collection. There are also well-stocked libraries with gorgeous inlaid marble tables.

Protect Yourself with Manulife

Why purchase travel insurance?

• Travel insurance can reimburse your for out of pocket expenses if your trip is canceled and some of it is non-refundable

• If your trip is interrupted – perhaps there is an emergency that requires you to return to your starting destination – expenses may be paid and arranged for you

• Medical coverage that we have at home, including provincial Canadian plans, typically pay only a portion of what medical care costs internationally.

Why Purchase Manulife Travel Insurance? 96% Claims Approval Rate!

We deal with Manulife Global Travel Insurance. We have carefully assessed travel insurance providers, and although these are not the cheapest policies – you do get what you pay for.  Part of the reason that we have chosen them is their claims record, which was to pay out 96% of claims.

Why You Should Avoid Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you have insurance on your credit card, please note that very few have coverage that is applicable to fully cover your trip, there are often changes to coverage as you age, and often traveling companions are not covered.

Update - Please note:  Policies are now available with Covid-19 coverage.  As always details are important – ask us!

We know that travel is important; for many of our client’s travel is essential to their sense of well-being.  Learning, relaxing, partaking in fulfilling experiences and filling up our memory bank is part of our identity.

Insurance can sometimes be the forgotten piece, but we can’t afford for it to be.  Insurance needs to be integral to every travel plan because lets be real…risk is a part of life.

So, what is your risk tolerance?  Are you ok to lose the investment in your travel plans?  Are you prepared to be out of pocket for your medical expenses, which can mount easily into the hundreds of thousands, and even more?

This is a very personal, but important part of your vacation planning. Everyone is different in terms of what risks they are willing to take, and in terms of their personal health experiences and how that may affect coverage and pricing.  Our ask – please put insurance into your planning, check the terms and conditions carefully, and give our insurance a chance.  Please don’t travel without good insurance coverage!

All insurance policies have terms and conditions, please make sure you are aware and are comfortable with yours!

Buy wisely, have peace of mind, and travel well!
